Wave Dynamics GuidesWhat Are SITRI and SITMA?
What the SITRI and SITMA sound testing schemes are, why registration matters for Building Control and how to check your tester is competent.
In Short
SITRI is the Sound Insulation Testing Register (Ireland), a register of competent sound insulation testers for projects in Ireland. SITMA is the Sound Insulation Testing Measurement Association, the UK body for sound insulation testers. Using a registered tester gives Building Control and clients confidence that tests were carried out correctly.
- SITRI covers testing in Ireland; SITMA covers testing in the UK.
- Both require testers to follow the measurement standards and demonstrate competence.
- Registration reduces the risk of results being challenged at completion.
- Wave Dynamics testing is SITRI and SITMA certified.
Why Tester Registration Exists
A sound insulation test is only as reliable as the person carrying it out. Small errors in microphone positions, background noise corrections or room volume calculations can move a result by several decibels, enough to turn a fail into a pass or the other way round. Registration schemes were set up so that Building Control, developers and buyers can rely on results from testers who have shown they understand the standards and carry out checks on their equipment and methods.
SITRI: The Irish Register
The Sound Insulation Testing Register (Ireland) was launched in 2015 to support pre-completion testing under TGD E. Testers on the register work to the relevant I.S. EN ISO measurement standards and the scheme requirements, and their test reports follow a consistent format that Building Control and assigned certifiers can review with confidence.
SITMA: The UK Association
SITMA is a UK body whose members carry out pre-completion testing for Approved Document E and the equivalent guidance elsewhere in the UK. Building Control bodies in the UK accept testing from SITMA members and from UKAS-accredited organisations as evidence of competence.
How to Check Your Tester
- Ask which scheme the tester is registered with, and check it covers the jurisdiction where the building is.
- Ask to see current calibration certificates for the sound level meter, calibrator and tapping machine.
- Check the report states the standards used and includes room volumes, background noise and reverberation data.
- Make sure the tester is independent of the contractor and supplier of the separating constructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SITRI registration a legal requirement?
TGD E asks for testing by a competent person. Registration with SITRI is the recognised way to show that competence in Ireland, and many Building Control authorities and certifiers expect it.
Can one tester work in both Ireland and the UK?
Yes, if they hold the right registration for each. Wave Dynamics is SITRI and SITMA certified, so we can test on projects in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
