Odour Modelling & Assessment
At Wave Dynamics, we provide specialist Odour Modelling and Assessment services across Ireland and the UK. With offices in Dublin, Wexford, Cork, Belfast and London, and a strong presence in Galway, we help developers, operators and planners understand, predict and manage potential odour impacts from a wide range of developments.
Our assessments support planning applications, environmental permitting and operational compliance by providing clear, evidence-based analysis of odour emissions and their potential effects on nearby sensitive receptors.
Odour Modelling & Assessment Services
Odour can be a key planning and environmental issue where emissions may affect residential properties, businesses or other sensitive receptors. Without proper assessment, odour impacts can lead to complaints, delays and additional mitigation requirements.
We assess odour risks across both proposed and existing developments, ensuring potential impacts are identified early and managed effectively.
Typical development types include:
- Waste management facilities
- Wastewater treatment works
- Industrial and manufacturing sites
- Food and beverage production
- Commercial kitchens and restaurants
- Agricultural and anaerobic digestion facilities
- Energy and utilities projects
- Residential developments near existing odour sources
Our Odour Modelling & Assessment Services
We provide a full range of odour consultancy services, including:
- Planning application support
- Environmental permit application support
- Odour dispersion modelling
- Baseline odour assessments
- Sensitive receptor assessments
- Odour impact evaluations
- Source–pathway–receptor analysis
- Kitchen odour risk assessments
- Odour sniffing surveys
- Review of odour complaints and operational issues
- Mitigation and management recommendations
- Technical reporting and regulatory support
Odour Dispersion Modelling
Odour dispersion modelling predicts how odour emissions may travel under different weather and operational conditions. This helps determine whether odour levels at sensitive receptors are likely to be acceptable and whether mitigation is required.
Our modelling supports:
- Point, area and volume sources
- Stack and vent emissions
- Waste handling and treatment facilities
- Industrial process emissions
- Commercial extraction systems
The results provide a robust technical basis for planning authorities, regulators and design teams.
Sensitive Receptor Assessment
A key part of our work is identifying and evaluating receptors that may be affected by odour emissions.
Sensitive receptors may include:
- Residential properties
- Schools and healthcare facilities
- Offices and workplaces
- Public spaces and amenity areas
- Ecologically sensitive locations (where relevant)
We assess the relationship between sources and receptors to understand potential risk and exposure.
Odour Mitigation & Management
Where necessary, we provide practical and proportionate mitigation measures to reduce odour impacts and support compliance.
These may include design modifications, operational controls, odour abatement systems and monitoring strategies.
Our recommendations are tailored to support:
- Planning submissions
- Environmental permit applications
- Operational management
- Regulatory compliance
