Wave Dynamics GuidesConstruction Noise Monitoring Explained
How construction noise monitoring works in Ireland and the UK: compliant equipment, monitor locations, real-time alerts, audio recording and reports.
In Short
Construction noise monitoring uses calibrated sound level meters at site boundaries or nearby homes to measure noise during works and check it against the limits in the planning permission or CEMP. Modern systems send real-time alerts when trigger levels are reached, so the site can act before a limit is breached.
- Usually required by planning conditions or the CEMP on larger or sensitive sites.
- Uses Class 1 meters to IEC 61672-1, calibrated and weather protected.
- Measures LAeq, LAFmax and LA90, often with audio recording to identify sources.
- Trigger and limit levels are usually based on BS 5228.
Why Monitor Construction Noise?
Monitoring gives the contractor, the client and the local authority an objective record of noise from the site. It shows compliance, helps manage neighbour relations and gives early warning when an activity is louder than planned. When a complaint comes in, monitoring data and audio recordings show what actually happened.
Where Monitors Go
Monitors are placed to represent the nearest noise-sensitive receptors, typically homes, schools or hospitals, or at the site boundary facing them. Positions are agreed with the local authority where the conditions require it. The microphone must be in a free-field position, away from reflecting walls, at a suitable height and clear of local sources such as generators or site cabins.
Compliant Equipment Set-Up
- Class 1 sound level meters to IEC 61672-1, with current laboratory calibration.
- Field calibration checks at installation and at each service visit.
- Outdoor microphone kits with windshields and weather protection.
- Secure, stable mounting with safe power and remote data connection.
A monitor that is badly placed or uncalibrated produces data that cannot be relied on, which is why set-up matters as much as the equipment itself.
Alerts, Audio and Reporting
Monitors can send text or email alerts to the site team when a trigger level is exceeded over a set period. Audio recording triggered by high levels lets the team hear what caused the event. Weekly or monthly reports summarise levels against the limits, list any exceedances and record the actions taken.
Frequently Asked Questions
What noise limits apply to construction sites?
Limits are set in the planning permission or CEMP, often using BS 5228 thresholds such as 65 to 75 dB LAeq during the day, depending on existing noise levels.
Can monitoring data be viewed online?
Yes. Our monitoring systems give live online access to levels, alerts and audio for the site team and, where agreed, the client.
