Project Overview
Wave Dynamics provided acoustic consultancy services for an underground electricity interconnector linking two solar farms in East Cork. The project consists of a 4.3km, 33kV underground cable connecting the proposed Ballynaclashy solar farm to the existing Lysaghtstown solar farm substation, forming part of the wider renewable energy infrastructure network in the region. Our work focused on delivering a robust noise impact assessment to support the planning application for this critical grid connection infrastructure. Key noise sources assessed included:
- Construction phase activity – trenching, cable installation and movement of plant
- Associated grid infrastructure – substations and electrical equipment
- Traffic and temporary works along the cable route
Noise Impact & Mitigation
Baseline noise surveys and predictive modelling were undertaken to assess potential impacts on nearby residential receptors along the cable route. The assessment considered short-term construction impacts and potential cumulative effects associated with ongoing solar farm development in the area.
A targeted mitigation strategy was developed, including:
- Management of construction working hours and activities
- Control measures for construction plant and equipment
- Routing and reinstatement strategies to minimise environmental and community impact
Outcome
The assessment demonstrated that the proposed developmeng can be carried out without significant long-term impact on surrounding amenity, with impacts limited primarily to the short construction phase. The acoustic strategy supported the successful grant of planning permission for this key piece of renewable energy infrastructure linking two solar farms to the national grid. [independent.ie]

He has hands-on experience in noise monitoring, vibration monitoring, and dust monitoring across a variety of infrastructure, construction, and environmental projects. Jack is involved in the setup, operation, and maintenance of monitoring equipment, ensuring accurate data collection in line with relevant standards and project requirements. He works closely with consultants and project teams, providing reliable field support that underpins high-quality assessments and reporting.
